This week saw the GreenScene gardening club supported by magic cash for kids out of the garden and into the kitchen with the aim of using some of our home grown rhubarb to make a crumble.
First a quick trip to the garden to harvest and then wash the rhubarb, followed by a chance to talk through the rule of the kitchen for hygiene and kitchen safety as well as a discussion and read through of the recipe we were tackling then it was on to the kitchen or hall in this case!
We first washed our hands not forgetting the importance of the hygene rules and the club was split into three teams with two teams making apple and blackberry crumble and one making rhubarb crumble, as we didn’t have enough rhubarb for everyone.
In each team one of the older children was shown how to use a sharp knife and tasked with cutting up the fruit. For the apple teams, another child was shown how to use the peeler and corer and then given the task of peeling the fruit. Whilst these children got cracking with the fruit, the remaining two children on each team were tasked with making the crumble topping. In pairs they weighed out flour and butter needed and then worked together to make a light bread crumb texture by rubbing the butter into the flour. This is a difficult technique so there were a few false starts and in some cases a bit of extra flour had to be added to rescue the mixture so it didn’t become dough!
Once the required consistency was achieved the sugar was weighed out by the children and added to the mix, this time it was stirred in carefully so not to ruin the hard won crumble texture.
Meanwhile, the children cutting and peeling the fruit, started to mix in the blackberries and cinnamon with the apples and orange juice and ginger in with the rhubarb - plus a small amount of sugar to sweeten it. The fruit was then spooned into separate small foil cooking trays and the children then sprinkled on the crumble topping. Each child was given a lid with a label on with cooking instructions on, and these were placed on the crumbles to make sure they got home okay and jolly tasty they were too!
