A Bumper Harvest

The harvest at Our Lady of Ransom PrimaryThe summer harvests at our 4 Grow Global schools (Hadleigh Juniors, Woodham Ley Primary, Milton Hall Primary School, and Our Lady of Ransom RC Primary School) have been plentiful over the last few months with bumper crops thanks to the early boost of sunshine at the end of the spring term.  Although this has made the weekly waterers job bit harder!

At each school loads of radishes were harvested with a fair few giants ones amongst the crop.  Some of the children brave enough to try this peppery vegetable for the first time really enjoyed them and are now radish converts.  The beetroots we pulled were fantastic, large and juicy but less appealing to the children than the carrots we grew.  However, that all changed when they were given a slice of beetroot chocolate cake, after which they were clambering for the purple roots and a recipe sheet.

Despite keeping many pairs of grow global eagle eyes on the courgettes a few slipped through the net and at a few clubs we found some rather giant marrows hiding under the foliage!

A good potato harvest was had with our four first early varieties producing great results; Red Duke of York was a great hit with it dark pink skin and came up trumps in the harvest across the board – although swift didn’t seem all that well suited to Milton Hall – with a few large tubers and the rest real tidlers!  At Our Lady of Ransom the school kitchen was well supplied – with lettuce and salad crops, broad beans, onions and even some strawberries getting through to the kitchen.

On top of all that harvesting runner beans, tomatoes, pumpkins and leeks to name a few are still growing so watch this space!
