Groundwork East of England is running a six month pilot with local authority partners to develop a behavioural change carbon reduction programme for primary and secondary schools. ‘Schools - switch on to turning off’ will run in four regional locations – Hertfordshire, Luton and Bedfordshire, South Essex and Haven Gateway, working with 2 schools in each. The pilot will be developed into a new regional programme since schools are now under a statutory obligation to reduce their carbon footprint and energy use. The programme will take a whole school approach to carbon reduction, working with the school community, pupils, teachers and parents on a long term basis to help them implement changes. Pupils will do this by exploring their own energy usage, using the school's gas/electricity meter, and create an energy saving action plan for their school.
