Ferrars Junior School

Parents at Ferrars Junior School in Luton will be getting their hands dirty with local environmental charity Groundwork Luton & Bedfordshire during a Family Action Day when work begins to transform the school’s wildlife area.

The Action Day marks the beginning of works on the ground at the school, following the development of designs for the wildlife garden and other outdoor learning areas through Groundwork’s John Laing Services to Schools Programme and the school’s successful application for Awards for All Lottery funding. The wildlife area is currently very overgrown with a leaking pond, too much shade and nowhere to sit. Parents will work alongside Groundwork’s landscape team to mend the pond, build a pond dipping platform, clear undergrowth and create seating areas. Pupils will also be out during the day to learn more about the wildlife, in particular the birds, by helping to erect a bird watching hide and by making bird feeders.

Following the action day on Wednesday 25 January, pupils and parents will have the opportunity to join the Really Wild After School Club. The Awards for All funded club will be run by Groundwork Luton and Bedfordshire’s Education Officer, working alongside staff from the school. Participants will have the opportunity to take part in activities such as bug hunting, bird safaris, bat box making and hedgerow surveys, which will allow them to explore and discover the wildlife in the school grounds and work towards completion of the John Muir Discovery Award.

The children are very excited about the forthcoming Really Wild club and are going to be making some fantastic additions to the Wildlife Garden including bird boxes and a bird watching screen''
