25 years of Groundwork in Hertfordshire

Groundwork Hertfordshire will be celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2010!

Established as a charity in September 1985, Groundwork Hertfordshire is this year celebrating 25 years of environmental regeneration in Hertfordshire.

When it began, the Trust specifically focused on the regeneration of land that had been used to extract minerals and to work in urban areas as, due to the presence of the Countryside Management Service in the county, it was felt that the rural regeneration of Hertfordshire was already covered.

Groundwork Hertfordshire has helped mark several environmental events in its history, including springing into action in 1987 when storms hit the county particularly hard with the loss of 100,000 trees, after which the "free tree scheme" was launched; a project that ran for 10 years until the 100,000th tree was planted to replace all those lost.

Over its 25 year history, the Trust has expanded to encompass the six key themes of the Federation; youth, education, land, business, communities and employment. It has also stretched its geographical range and now delivers projects not only in Hertfordshire, but in Luton and South Bedfordshire and parts of Essex.

To celebrate our 25th anniversary, Groundwork Hertfordshire will be carrying out a variety of events, activities and features, and will update our website with news and information about these items.

We would like to say a huge thank you to all our funders, partners and the inspirational communities that we have worked with over the last 25 years. We are always looking for new challenges and areas of the county that we can help transform to improve the lives of the people who live, work and play in our local communities.

As part of our 25 years celebrations, Groundwork will be publishing articles looking at the issues that have shaped the history of the Trust, and interviewing key people who have been involved during this time.  Please follow the links below to learn more and check back to this page regularly, as new articles will be added throughout 2010!
