Green Team in action using donated supplies from Amey

Two local organisations are celebrating after setting up a new partnership that will help Hertfordshire’s young people into employment.

Amey, who manage and maintain the local authority roads within Hertfordshire, is supporting Groundwork Hertfordshire, the county’s leading environmental regeneration charity, by providing skilled employees, material donations and local knowledge to a variety of different projects in the county.

Amey has committed to providing assistance to Groundwork’s Green Team - a voluntary training scheme for unemployed young people aged 16 – 25 with few or no qualifications. Through supporting interview and CV preparation skills workshops, Amey has been able to provide Green Team volunteers with the opportunity to develop their capabilities and experience real-life examples of what businesses require from perspective employees.

Clive Rillstone, Service Director at Amey said: “It has been fantastic to work in partnership with Groundwork, and to have the opportunity to support local young people in developing their skills and increasing their chance of employment. Amey is committed to working closely within the local communities we provide services to and I’m looking forward to developing our partnership with Groundwork further.”

To further support the Green Team with their training programme, Amey has provided materials to Groundwork for use in local regeneration projects. Recently, paving slabs provided by Amey have been used to complete a paving project at Silverfields in Wormley, Broxbourne. The Green Team created a new pathway in a community garden for the residents of Silverfields, so they can enjoy the community garden and newly constructed pergola and raised flower beds.

Steve Harvey, Executive Director at Groundwork Hertfordshire, said: “Amey’s provision of both staff time and materials has been highly valuable to our Green Team programme.  It has allowed the young people to interact with business professionals, giving them the chance to talk about their ambitions and potential career direction with someone already in the industry.  We are delighted that Amey has been able to support us to provide this ‘added value’ element of our award–winning Green Team programme.”

Additionally, Amey employees have donated their time to work on Groundwork’s popular Green Aiders project, providing assistance to local elderly or disabled adults who are unable to maintain their own gardens and thus help them stay living in their own homes for longer. GreenAiders also benefits the volunteers, allowing them to work in small teams, learning basic gardening skills and achieving instant results. Since September 2009 Groundwork has rejuvenated over 150 gardens in the Boroughs of Broxbourne, Watford and Dacorum.
